Lamalera located on the south coast of the Lembata island province of East Nusa Tenggara. Currently Lembata island has become its own district before joining the East Flores Regency. Before it lies a fairly malignant Sawu Sea. Was long known as Lamalera fishing community, and traditional whaling.
Before the hunting season, the Lamalera village has a tradition or culture whaling which is held annually customary to invoke the blessings of the ancestors and to recall the spirit of their ancestors who died in the field of Maritime wrestling with the pope. Ceremony, or commonly called lefa held every May 1.
In his official whaling took place in May-November, but not infrequently also the month from December to April Lamalera fishermen keep doing commercial whaling when whales pass through the waters of the Sawu Sea. It is not meant to violate the customs that have been in charge, in which the months are the months of hunting Lamalera named or referred to baleo.
