The Meaning & History of Eid al-Adha đ
Eid al-Adha, also known as 'Hari Raya Kurban', is a major holiday for Muslims around the world. Eid al-Adha generally falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijja or approximately 70 days after Eid al-Fitr. If we look at the historical side of Eid al-Adha, it cannot be separated from the story of Prophet Ibrahim. Where Prophet Ibrahim received instructions through a dream to slaughter his son Ismail. As a form of obedience to Allah, finally the two agreed to slaughter. But finally the process of slaughtering Ismail was replaced by a sheep because of the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim who carried out orders from God.
From the events above, it can be concluded that Eid al-Adha teaches the values of sacrifice, sincerity, patience, obedience, the value of sharing, and the command to sacrifice.

đ Eid al-Adha 2025 Traditions
The 2025 Eid al-Adha holiday falls on Friday, June 6 Apart from Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha is a religious holiday that Muslims look forward to. Before slaughtering the sacrificial animals, Muslims are advised to fast Eid al-Adha or commonly known as Arafat fast. It is named as Arafat fasting because the moment coincides with wukuf in Arafat performed by pilgrims. The next day, the Eid al-Adha prayer is held which consists of 2 rak'ahs. After that, the process of slaughtering sacrificial animals is carried out. The sacrificial animals that have been slaughtered will be distributed by people in need, people who sacrifice, and relatives or neighbors.
Eid al-Adha is not only about the slaughtering of sacrificial animals and the Eid al-Adha prayer, but also about the celebratory traditions of various regions. For example:
-
Apitan tradition in Semarang: This tradition is usually carried out as a form of gratitude for the sustenance of crops. The Apitan tradition is usually filled with prayer events and is followed by a procession of crops and livestock which are then later distributed by the community.
-
Manten Sapi tradition in Pasuruan: It is a tradition of dressing up sacrificial animals as beautifully as possible. Later, the dressed animal will be brought to the mosque to be slaughtered.
-
Grebeg Gunungan tradition in Yogyakarta: This tradition is slightly similar to the Apitan tradition in Semarang where the people of Jogja will bring a gunungan composed of harvested crops. This gunungan of harvested crops will be carried from the Yogyakarta Palace courtyard to the Gede Kauman Mosque.
