🕋 The Meaning & History of Eid al-Fitr 🕌

Eid al-Fitr is a Muslim holiday celebrated every 1st of Shawwal in the Hijri calendar. The origin of the name Eid itself comes from the word 'Eid' which means celebration. While 'al-Fitr' means fitrah or has the meaning of returning to the original (human nature). While in Indonesia itself, the term Lebaran is also more common among the public. Lebaran itself refers to the Javanese language which means finished or over, referring to the end of Ramadan fasting.

The history of the establishment of Eid al-Fitr began in Medina, in 624 AD or the 2nd year of Hijriyah. At that time the Muslims had just completed their first Ramadan fast. When he saw the hilal in the sky, the Prophet Muhammad announced that the next day was a feast day, as a sign of victory and gratitude.

Therefore, the true meaning of Eid al-Fitr is a moment of victory for Muslims celebrating the return to the original human nature after running 1 month of fasting full of worship & self-introspection. The moment of Eid 2025 is not only about celebration, but also a moment to forgive each other, establish relationships, and share zakat which reflects the values of love and care in Islam.
