Air Canada Features
Air Canada is the 11th largest airline in the world based on fleet size and passenger capacity. The airline, founded in 1937, provides scheduled air transportation and chartering for passengers and cargo on routes to 207 destinations worldwide. Air Canada is one of the members who founded the Star Alliance and has a main base or hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Canada's national airline originated in the Canadian federal government of 1936, which created Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA). The airline began operating its first transcontinental flight route in 1938, and in 1965, TCA changed its name to Air Canada following government approval. After deregulating the Canadian airline market in the 1980s, the airline was privatized in 1988, and on January 4, 2000, Air Canada acquired its biggest rival, Canadian Airlines.
Passenger flights first began on September 1, 1937, with Electra carrying two passengers and a letter from Vancouver to Seattle. Whereas the transcontinental route first started on April 1, 1939, using 12 Lockheed L-14 Super Electra and six Lockheed L-18 Lodestar with flight routes from Montreal to Vancouver.
Air Canada's carrier operations division includes Air Canada Cargo, Air Canada Express, Air Canada Jetz (private jet charters), and Air Canada Rouge (recreational airlines). Air Canada also has a subsidiary called Air Canada Vacations, which provides vacation packages to more than 90 destinations. Together with its regional partners, the airline operates an average of more than 1,613 scheduled flights every day.
The fleet renewal continues by Air Canada. The airline has a fleet of Airbus A330, Boeing 767, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner for long-haul flights. As for short-haul flights, the airline uses Airbus A320 (including A319, A320, and A321 variants), Boeing 737 MAX 8, Airbus A220-300, and Embraer 190.
