American Airlines, Inc. (AA) is a major American airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, in the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex. American Airlines is the largest airline in the world based on fleet size, revenue, passengers carried, and destination routes served. America, together with its regional partners, operates an extensive international and domestic network with nearly 6,800 flights per day to almost 350 destinations in more than 50 countries. American Airlines is a founding member of the Oneworld alliance, the third largest airline alliance in the world. Regional services are operated by an independent operator, which is a subsidiary of the American Eagle brand name.

American Airlines and American Eagle operate in 10 hubs, with the most extensive center located in Dallas/Fort Worth, which handles more than 200 million passengers annually with an average of more than 500,000 passengers every day. American operates its main maintenance base in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. In 2019, the company employed nearly 130,000 people.

American Airlines was founded in 1930 through the union of more than eighty small-scale airlines in America. The two organizations that formed American Airlines originated from Robertson Aircraft Corporation and Colonial Air Transport, which were created in Missouri in 1921, and both were merged in 1929 to become a holding company called The Aviation Corporation.

In 1930, The Aviation changed its name to American Airways, which was the forerunner of American Airlines. In 1934, when new laws and contract friction urged many airlines to reorganize their organizations, American Airways changed routes and connected systems and changed its name to American Airlines. Between 1970 and 2000, the company grew into an international airline and bought Trans World Airlines in 2001.
