I stayed here because it was in walking distance (c.20 minutes) of the UK Visa Advisory Center at 213 Middle Sichuan Road. The nearest Metro station is People's Square on Green Line 2, which from Hongqiao Railway Station costs only 5 Yuan. I was pre-booked by an agency into an Executive Room costing GBP £ 78 for one night. However, unlike at the Bund Riverside Hotel a month earlier, staff were aggressively unhelpful about lending any assistance in downloading a local Shanghai health code onto my mobile phone. All that mattered to them was that it was a local government order. When I showed them my Yangzhou health code and complained about their attitude, the desk manager threatened to refuse me service at all. I had to loudly demand customer service before I finally got any assistance with their code. I was in physical distress (aged 62), sweating profusely and feeling faint, which caused them no concern whatever, such was their xenophobic contempt for a foreign guest.
There was no mini-bar, but at check-out the next morning they asked whether I had drunk anything from the room. There is a bar downstairs, but it closes at 7:30 p.m. Thankfully there is a 7-11-type "C-Store" nearby and a good "Chez Amis" restaurant adjoining Nanjing Road.
They also tried to avoid cancelling my RMB ¥ 500 deposit and I had to stand over them to demand they do so in front of me. I shall have to thoroughly check my credit card statement.
Oh yes, and the WC toilet in this "Executive Room" 1021 does not flush.
I submitted a feedback form detailing my complaints but have received no reply. The least I should get is a formal apolgy for their arrogant rudeness, and my booking agency should really give me a refund.
