When completed in 1983, Jinling was the only 5-star hotel in Nanjing.
The Hotel was conceptualised and built by a Nanjing diaspora returnee who made his reputation in Singapore, Sri Lanka, and elsewhere. Legend has it that he did not own any shares and his services were honorary, and the completed hotel ended up totally owned by the City of Nanjing complete with management trained overseas.
Fast forward to the present. When an extension to the 600+ rooms was contemplated, he was invited to own up to 49% of the additional 300+ rooms. It is now located in the upper floors of the Asia Pacific Tower connected to the existing hotel.
We stayed on the 52nd floor of the new wing and "the Queen" lived up to its well deserved reputation.
Everything you can get in an international chain, Jinling provides it. The rooms were exceptionally clean, the appointments and furnishings are well thought out, Even the screen and curtain were electrically operated.
The breakfast spread, especially for modern Chinese cuisine, leaves nothing left to be desired. From good aromatic coffee to steaming hot bean curd juice, congee with all condiments, Japanese style okayu to steaming rice with salmon and pickles, nothing was in want.
The service is to be savoured. One flick of your card key, and they have all your info. If you are a repeat diner, even your favourite beverage (for me double coffee espresso, Americano for my wife) is unobtrusively delivered.
For fine dining, we had Huai Yang cuisine (a la Yangzhou/Nanjing) in Mei Garden on level 2. We also had dinner on the 56th floor in the new wing (where breakfast is served) and it was transformed into a hot pot restaurant at night with table top individual induction cookers. What we enjoyed most were the varieties of vegetables, leafy or root, together with exotic sauces. Naturally, the obligatory seafood, wagyu beef and lamb slices were all waiting to be cooked, whether in chicken broth, mala Sichuan soup, or plain hot water, all without MSG. The service, as usual, was par excellence.
What is there not to like? I urge you to try it for yourself and enjoy being pampered!
