Between the air conditioning that didn't work and left us sweltering in 38 degree heat, the gunshot-like sounds that rang out until some man chased the group of noisemakers away several hours in and the man singing (is there a mosque nearby?) the entire night, we had a really restless last night in Sorong. I don't know if this is pretty standard for Sorong as we only had one night there after being on a liveaboard but it was not a great one!

We choose griya for one night after raja. We got a free pick up from the harbour and frew shuttle to the airport. The room are big enough, very clean, warm water, ac, tv. They got softtrinks to buy and stuff for local prices. Price is the cheapest if u book directly over their Homepage. Breakfast is a coffee and a bread. Dont expect much. Glad there is a free breakfast included. Close in walking distance are local Streetfood, small shop and pharmacy. We can highly recommend this guesthouse for a pleasent stay. We are backpackers.

Over the last 4 years I've stayed in 6 or 7 different hotels in Sorong. The rooms in this one are fine for the price but the management is not good, they seem to have no idea that hotels are in the service industry. Several little requests were rejected and the 'breakfast' was a cup of coffee with a plain white bread roll. A second cup of coffee must be paid for. When our kids arrived off the plane they were not allowed to sit with us in our air conditioned room or even buy a coffee to have in the un-airconditioned lobby with us. An early check in costs an extra 80.000 but most guests arrive on very early flights so it's almost inevitable you have to pay to check in early. So if you're arriving early add that extra 80,000 to the room rate, in my opinion you'll be far happier in another slightly more expensive hotel (eg the Fave Hotel near the airport is excellent). A disappointing stay.

The Griya Ringo seemed perfect at first. They replied to my emails quickly and in English. As promised, they picked me up at the airport when I arrived. They offered me a pamphlet of information about Sorong (in English) when I checked-in that was very helpful. The room was clean and met all my needs. I was there for two nights, and the only downside initially was that the Griya Ringo isn’t particularly close to any restaurants or amenities. However, on my second night there I had a long shower. There must have been something wrong with the drain because instead of draining out of the bathroom, the water ran under the bathroom door and into the bedroom and out into the hallway. Because there is no shelving or closet in the room, all of my belongings were lying on the floor and got soaked. All of my clothing, my books, my passport ... all drenched. I ran downstairs to get the man at reception and he just looked annoyed that I was interrupting his video games. The staff did almost nothing for me. They actually laughed at me when I asked for a new room. Only after I got angry did they offer me solution for my shopping wet clothes. They allowed me to hang my clothes from some filthy chairs in an equally filthy garage. It was a muggy night and nothing dried. I left for Raja Ampat with a (very heavy) bag of soaking wet clothing. Now, I would not be all that upset if the staff had acted concerned and sorry for what happened to me. But they did not. If anything, they seemed annoyed with me because they had to mop instead of playing video games. They told me a number of times to stop worrying because they were not worried about it. Of course they weren’t worried, all of their belongings were safe and dry and the pages of their passports weren’t all stuck together. It’s too bad that the staff at the Griya Ringo are so inconsiderate, it would be a good place otherwise!
