 Origin of the “Prambanan” Name

T-mates, do you know about the etymology or origin of the name Prambanan Temple? The name Prambanan comes from the name of the village where this temple stands. This name is thought to be a change in the name of the Javanese dialect of the Hindu theological term "Para Brahman" which means "Great Brahman".

Brahman is the supreme eternal reality in Hinduism that cannot be described. Another name that may be related to the origin of this name is "Para Brahman" which refers to the heyday of this temple which was filled with brahmins.

There is also another opinion which states that the name "Prambanan" comes from the root word "mban" in Javanese which means to bear or assume duties. This refers to the Hindu gods who carry out the task of organizing and maintaining harmony in the universe.

Although the origin of this name is still debated, it cannot be denied that Prambanan Temple is one of the enchanting Hindu architectural wonders and reflects the greatness of the Hindu religion.

History of Candi Prambanan Temple

Prambanan Temple was built in the 9th century AD by Rakai Pikatan, a king from the Ancient Mataram Kingdom. At its peak, this temple was a religious center and a place for important royal ceremonies.

However, in the 10th century AD, the capital of the Mataram Kingdom was moved to East Java by Sri Maharaja Mpu Sindok. After this move, Prambanan Temple began to be abandoned and neglected, so it experienced damage and was in danger of collapse. For centuries, this temple was forgotten and covered by forests and land.

The search for Prambanan Temple again occurred in the 18th century. In 1991, Prambanan Temple was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come see the history of Prambanan Temple from time to time below!

Construction of Prambanan Temple

The construction of Candi Prambanan Temple was started by Sri Maharaja Rakai Pikatan as an effort to match the greatness of Borobudur Temple, which is a Buddhist temple. Located not far from Sewu Temple, Prambanan Temple is also a symbol of competition between two dynasties of different beliefs, namely the Sanjaya dynasty which adheres to Hinduism and the Sailendra dynasty which adheres to Buddhism.

The construction of Prambanan Temple marked the return of the royal family's support for Saivite Hinduism after previously the Sailendra dynasty tended to support Mahayana Buddhism.

The construction of Candi Prambanan Temple began around 850 AD by Rakai Pikatan and continued to be perfected by King Lokapala and King Sri Maharaja Dyah Balitung Maha Sambu. The Siwagrha inscription dates to 856 AD.

It was revealed that this temple was built to glorify the god Shiva and has the original name Siwagrha or Siwalaya, which means 'House of Shiva' or 'Region of Shiva'. During the construction of Prambanan Temple, work was also carried out to change the water system to move the flow of the Opak river which is located near this temple. This was done to protect the temple construction from river erosion.

Development and Restoration

Candi Prambanan Temple continued to be expanded and perfected by subsequent kings of Medang Mataram, such as Raja Sri Maharaja Dyah Daksa and Sri Maharaja Dyah Tulodong. During its heyday, this temple became a Hindu religious and worship center, where various important government ceremonies were held.

Hundreds of Brahmin priests and their students gathered and occupied the outer courtyard of the temple to study the Vedas and carry out various Hindu rituals and ceremonies.

However, around the 930s, the center of royal power moved to East Java by Sri Maharaja Mpu Sindok, founder of the Isyana Dynasty. The cause of this shift in the center of power is still debated, but the strong suspicion is that it was due to the violent eruption of Mount Merapi which had an impact on the area around the temple.

After this move, Prambanan Temple began to be neglected and not maintained, so that the temple slowly experienced damage and collapsed.

In 1733, CA. Lons, a Dutch heir, rediscovered the existence of Prambanan Temple. However, serious restoration and excavation efforts were only carried out in the 1930s.

This restoration was carried out in stages by various parties, including the Antiquities Bureau and archaeologists such as Theodoor van Erp and Isaäc Groneman. The ongoing restoration work has made Prambanan Temple a World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO since 1991.

Contemporary Events

In 2006, Candi Prambanan Temple suffered major damage due to an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale. This earthquake caused the collapse of a number of buildings and statues in the temple complex.

However, after restoration and repairs were carried out, Prambanan Temple was again opened for tourist visits. Currently, this temple is one of the main cultural tourist attractions in Indonesia and is a place of Hindu religious worship for the local Hindu community.

T-mates, Candi Prambanan Temple does have a very interesting history. From its construction by Sri Maharaja Rakai Pikatan to its restoration and restoration after the earthquake, this temple continues to exude its beauty and charm.

Siwagrha Inscription

The history of Prambanan Temple was mentioned in the Siwagrha inscription dated 856 AD. The Siwagrha Inscription, also known as the Wantil Inscription, is a historical inscription originating from Central Java. This inscription is made of andesite stone and is thought to have been made in 778 Saka or around 856 AD.

This inscription was issued by Sri Maharaja Rake Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala Sri Sajjanotsawatungga, who was the successor of Sri Maharaja Rakai Pikatan Dyah Saladu Sang Prabhu Jatinirat.

This inscription provides a description of a great group of temples dedicated to the god Shiva called Shivagrha, which is very similar to the Prambanan group of temples we know today.

The Myth of Roro Jonggrang and the Origins of Candi Prambanan Temple

Before talking about entrance tickets, let's first study the Candi Prambanan story. Do you know what kingdom Prambanan Temple is a heritage from? Candi Prambanan Temple is a relic of the ancient Mataram kingdom.

When visiting, t-mates will see three large and tall temples among the surrounding temples. Because Prambanan Temple is based on Hinduism, the three temples are special offerings to each of the Hindu Trimurti gods. Namely the god Shiva, the god Brahma and the god Vishnu.

In the inscription Siwagrha, the original name of this temple complex is Siwagrha which is Sanskrit for the House of Shiva. So, t-mates can immediately know that the highest temple in the middle is the Shiva Temple. Inside, there is a statue of the god Shiva which you can see when visiting.

Prambanan Temple is also known as Roro Jonggrang Temple. This name is connected with local folklore which continues to this day. Roro Jonggrang herself was the daughter of the reigning king at that time, Raja Baka. Roro Jonggrang is known as a beautiful princess. Many kings from other kingdoms wanted to marry the princess. However, none of them met the requirements requested by Roro Jonggrang.

One of those who wanted to marry Roro Jonggrang was Bandung Bondowoso. He is a giant who has extraordinary strength. Because he was afraid to refuse, Roro Jonggrang then put forward quite tough conditions. He asked to make a temple with a thousand areas that had to be completed in one night.

As a powerful person, Bandung Bondowoso was confident to fulfill this request. Towards morning when the bath was almost finished, Princess Roro Jonggrang tried to thwart the work. Because Bandung Bondowoso was assisted by genies in completing his work and they were afraid of the sun rising, the king's daughter and her ladies-in-waiting invited the farmers to hit the rice mortar and light torches and then the roosters crowed.

As a result, Bandung Bondowoso's friends left, leaving the work unfinished. Bandung Bondowoso knew that this was the princess's trick, then got angry and cursed the princess to become a stone area as a complement to the unfinished area. The statue is the statue of Durga Mahisasuramardini which is currently in a niche to the north of the main temple (Ciwa temple).

Prambanan Temple Reliefs

At the Shiva Temple and Brahma Temple, you can see reliefs carved on the temple walls. What is the story like engraved on the reliefs of Prambanan Temple? Here's the review.

1. Ramayana and Krishnayana

Prambanan Temple is decorated with narrative reliefs that tell the story of two famous Hindu epics, namely the Ramayana and Krishnayana. This relief is engraved on the inner wall of the balustrade that surrounds the three main temples.

When looking at these reliefs, we will see the story flowing from right to left, clockwise around the temple. This follows the pradaksina ritual, namely the ritual of circling the holy building clockwise by pilgrims.

The Ramayana story begins on the east side of the Shiva temple and continues to the Brahma temple. At the Shiva temple, we will see how Shinta, Rama's wife, was kidnapped by Ravana. Then, at the Brahma temple, the story continues with Hanuman, the commander of the Vanara nation, coming to Lanka to help Rama look for Shinta.

The story of Krishnayana, on the other hand, can be found on the balustrade of the Vishnu temple. This narrative relief tells of Krishna's life as one of Vishnu's avatars. Through this relief, we can understand more deeply about Krishna's role in Hindu mythology.

2. Lokapala, Brahmin, and Dewata

Apart from narrative reliefs, Candi Prambanan Temple is also decorated with various statues and reliefs depicting gods and Brahmin sages. In the Shiva temple, we can find statues of the Lokapala gods, namely heavenly gods who are the guardians of the cardinal points. They symbolize strength and courage in protecting the temple.

In the Brahma temple, we will find statues of the Brahmin sages who were the compilers of the Veda books. They symbolize knowledge and wisdom in Hinduism.

Meanwhile, in the Vishnu temple, we can find a statue of the god flanked by two apsaras or heavenly angels. They symbolize the beauty and grace that exist in Hindu mythology.

3. Prambanan Panel

T-mates, did you know that on the outer wall at the bottom of the Prambanan temple there are rows of niches that hold lion statues? This lion statue is flanked by two panels depicting the Kalpataru tree of life. This sacred tree in Hindu-Buddhist mythology is considered a tree that can fulfill human hopes and needs.

At the foot of the Kalpataru tree, we can also find kinnara-kinnari pairs or other animal pairs such as birds, deer, sheep, monkeys, horses, elephants, and others. This lion pattern flanked by kalpataru is a typical pattern that is only found in Prambanan, so it is called the "Prambanan Panel".
