History of GWK
The history of GWK is quite long, t-mates. GWK itself was built quite a long time ago, namely 28 years. The project to build the GWK Statue was first initiated in 1989 by Balinese artist, I Nyoman Nuarta. In 1990, this idea received approval from the President of the Republic of Indonesia at that time, Suharto. I Nyoman Nuarta was appointed as the architect for the construction of this statue.
However, the development process stopped in 1998 due to the monetary crisis that hit Indonesia. The GWK statue was neglected for more than a decade before being resumed in 2013 by PT. Alam Sutera Realty Indonesia.
In the advanced stages of construction, I Nyoman Nuarta collaborated with around 120 other sculpture artists to complete this project. The GWK statue is made of a mixture of steel and copper with a total weight of 4,000 tons. The structure of this statue consists of copper, brass, and is supported by 21,000 steel rods and 170,000 bolts.
After going through a series of tests which included wind resistance tests, periodic cavity testing, and soil testing, the GWK Statue construction project was finally completed on September 22 2018. President Joko Widodo inaugurated this statue as one of Indonesia's proud assets.
