Description
History of Osaka Castle
Back in 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle to unite Japan during the Sengoku period. Despite heavy damage during the Boshin War and World War II, it was rebuilt in 1928 to restore its original design.
Today, Osaka Castle stands tall at eight stories, surrounded by a six-tier moat and massive stone walls. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking views, Osaka Castle remains one of Japan's most visited attractions.
Must-Visit Places in Osaka Castle
Find these famous landmarks on your next Osaka Castle visit:
1. Osaka Castle Museum
Inside the main tower, the Osaka Museum has over 10,000 historical treasures like samurai swords, armor, and weapons. You can even try on replicas of samurai helmets and surcoats, including Toyotomi Hideyoshi's iconic black helmet with golden horns.

Head up to the main tower roof for an amazing 360-degree view of Osaka city. You'll spot landmarks like the Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Bay, and Abeno Harukas skyscraper. Keep an eye out for the "shachi" too—a creature with the body of a carp and the head of a tiger that's said to protect the castle from fire.
